The Brandon Sun - 10/5/2018

Manitoba's Mental Health Review Board has 12 newly appointed members, Health, Seniors and Active Living Minister Cameron Friesen announced Wednesday.

The board has 27 members made up of 11 psychiatrists, eight lawyers and eight public members.

Norm Sims (QC) of Minnedosa was one of six lawyers appointed to the board, along with five other attorneys from Winnipeg.

Maureen Stitt of Brandon was appointed as a new public board member along with five others.

The new appointees will serve two to three year terms, with the start days and terms staggered in an effort to allow for the uninterrupted continuation of the board's daily operations.

The review board hears applications in regards to the admission of patients in a designated psychiatric facility and their treatment.

"By providing oversight for decisions relating to the admission and treatment of psychiatric patients, the Mental Health Review Board performs a valuable service for Manitoba's health-care system," said Friesen. "Our government congratulates the new members on their appointments and have faith they will excel in their new roles."
